PRESENCE
People, objects and spaces continue to change the longer they are observed.
A portrait, a figure or an ordinary arrangement of objects rarely stays what it first appears to be. As the painting develops, the relationships between forms become more important than the forms themselves.
These paintings begin with familiar subjects, but they do not end there. Through colour, composition and form each painting is simplified, reordered and transformed until appearance gives way to presence. The finished work is not an imitation of its subject, but what remains of the transformation.
