PLACE
A place is never seen only once.
It changes with the light, the season, the weather and the time spent returning to it. Observation begins the painting, but memory gradually becomes part of it. What is remembered, overlooked or discovered matters as much as what first caught the eye.
These paintings begin with landscapes, architecture and interiors, many found in and around Cape Town and the Western Cape. Through colour, composition and form they are simplified, reordered and transformed until the painting becomes something separate from the place that first gave rise to it. It is not the place itself that is painted, but what remains after sustained attention.
